Roccia della Scoperta (4178 m)

Summer 2018 news
On the occasion of the 240th anniversary of the conquest of the first 4000 meters of the Alps on the Monte Rosa massif, we propose the ascent to the Entedeckòngsfelse – the Rock of the Discovery where you can visit on the most important glacier of Italy. The Lys glacier, actually, is one of the widest Italian glaciers. From the summit the view on the Alps and the surrounding glaciers is wonderful.

Some history
The first ascent was accomplished on the 17th August 1778 by 7 mountain men of Gressoney, which have to be considered the forerunners of the Italian alpinism: Jean-Joseph Beck, Valentin Beck, Franz Castel, Jean-Etienne Litschgi, Joseph Zumstein, Sebastian Linty and Nicolaus Vincent. The legends of the Lost Valley and of the Félik City combined with the strong desire of exploring 2de gletscher” (the glacier) drove these young to undertake the adventure. Everything was organised in the detail and in secret: the itinerary, the order of the march, how to walk on the glacier with a rope and the necessary equipment (rope, crampons and sticks). They reached the rocky summit in the middle of the Lysjoch and named it Entedeckòngsfelse – the Rock of the Discovery.
In 1913, during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Italian Alpine Club, this ascent was described as " the holy exploit of the Italian alpinism”.
